Word count service

Project:Mori
Version:1.1.2
Component:User interface
Category:feature
Priority:normal
Assigned:Unassigned
Status:closed

Description

An option to show text details about the current note in realtime (optional because if you don't care about this info then it just clutters up the nice, clean interface). Information like letter count and word count. Maybe down in the bottom of the window but right justified. This is one of those features that writers usually like, especially ones who are writing a column that is limited to a certain number of words.

Agree. This will be a nice function when drafting sections of a report or books etc.

Yes, a useful function for me as well. Almost critical, but not quite.

Title:Word count» Word count service

Why not just use the "Statistics" service already available in all cocoa programs?

The "statistics" service is neat to have but cumbersome to use. Having quick and easy access to this kind of information is pretty essential for many writers, at least for this one!

But as you point out, the service can help until Jesse has time to include a word count feature in Mori. :-)

[Service Scrubber](http://www.petermaurer.de/nasi.php?section=servicescrubber) looks like it might be very useful if you want to make better use of the Services menu. I haven't tried it yet myself, but you might give it a try.

I'll check it out. In the meantime, I noticed that DevonThink (which I mostly use for storage) has word, paragraph and character counts that display automatically in the bottom border of the window as you type in the text field. This would be extremely useful. Don't know how hard to implement. But I'll check out Service Scrubber. I use some of Peter Maurer's other products and they are good. Many thanks.

Here's a more refined request.
* List the number of characters, words, paragraphs, and images in the current note.

* The list must remain visible in some part of the interface and be updated in realtime (or up to the second) to be usable. As Alexandria mentioned the bottom border area is well suited for this.

* The list should allow for high information density so that it can be taken in at a glance. c: 300 w: 85 p: 10 i: 9 shows characters, words, paragraphs, images in a small area. Using lowercase for the letters makes it easier to differentiate between text and the numbers due to different heights. It would be nice if (after getting used to the positions) a person could set an option to display just the numbers as in 300 85 10 9. This would allow newcomers and experienced users to tweak the display as they like.

The options could be:
- divider character(s) (so I could define the display as 300/85/10/9 or 300.85.10.9 or 300 85 10 9
- prefix for each bit of information, such as "characters" or "c:" or "chars - " so the display can be any of: chars - 300, pars - 85; or c - 300, p - 85; or c300 p85.
- make the list of items that are shown entirely user definable so that if a person only cares about word count and image count the rest can be turned off.

* Allow the list to show up in the minimal note window that has been requested

* Provide an ability to get this kind of information for multiple notes, or an entire notebook. Say I want to know how many words and paragraphs are in three chapters of a book, this function would allow me to specify these three chapters (somehow) and get a summary of word, paragraph etc. info. Maybe even some averages like "Average of 80 paragraphs per note".

One tool that makes services more accessible is ICeCoffEE at http://web.sabi.net/nriley/software/, which addes services to the context menu of many applications, including Mori. Please note, however, that it requires Unsanity's Application Enhancer.

Another useful addition to this one:
* If a block of text is selected then the letter count etc. applies to the selected text, otherwise it applies to the full note.
